Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Hands down one of the best books for 2017! I read it in one sitting, pausing only momentarily to get food. 😛 This book is written as a collection of IM records, video/audio transcripts, graphics, files, memos, and more. It is super unique and crazy fun to read. Plus, it’s unexpected and very suspenseful.
Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer
This book is probably tied with Illuminae as my favorite from 2017. This is a young adult novel that follows two seemingly very different characters. One is serving community service to avoid jail time, while the other is struggling to enjoy her former passion, photography, in the wake of her mother’s death. I don’t know how to describe it in a way that makes it sounds better… but trust me, you want to pick this one up! It’s beautiful!
The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen
This novel (middle-grade, I believe) follows a boy who is chosen to impersonate the lost prince of a kingdom. Along with several other boys, he learns the knowledge needed to pass as the “false prince” in order to ensure that the kingdom doesn’t end up in the wrong hands. I loved this novel because you don’t know what’s going to happen next.
Happily Ever After by Kelly Oram
Cinder and Ella is definitely one of my favorite books of all time, and Brian/Ella one of my favorite book couples. This book is a sequel to Cinder and Ella, and deals with more adult themes. As a couple (yay!) Brian and Ella work through problems thrown their way. On Ella’s side, she’s struggling to love her body, as it’s primarily covered in burns. On Brian’s side comes all of the difficulties that come with fame.
Secret by Brigid Kemmerer and Sacrifice by Brigid Kemmerer
Okay, so I’m cheating by including two books, but I just couldn’t choose! These are books four and five in the Elementals series by Brigid Kemmerer. Secret follows Nick Merrick, an air elemental, as responsibility after responsibility, secret after secret piles on his shoulders. I loved how this story built up, and how Brigid Kemmerer is able to get you to relate to any character so intimately. (This is her gift, I swear. You become the characters, regardless of whether they’re like you or not.) Sacrifice follows Michael Merrick (my favorite of the Merrick brothers!), an earth elemental. This conclusion to the elemental series does not dissappoint!
