Hello! Here is my TBR (to be read) list for July. I’m not sure if I’ll get to all of these, but I’m certainly going to try! Some of these are sequels to books I’ve previously read. Expect to see reviews for those books in the coming months.

The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson

I first heard about this book through an incredibly well done Ted Talk (which you can find on YouTube here). After reading one of his other books So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed (review coming soon!) and enjoying it, I definitely want to check this one out as well. In it he studies the “madness industry” and how it has evolved over time. Is there really a such thing as a psychopath? Do you look at people differently if you’re expecting them to be a psychopath?

Heaven’s Queen by Rachel Bach

This is book three in the Paradox series. Rachel Bach does an amazing job of developing incredibly unique characters and the cultures surrounding them. Not only is the main character absoultely kick-butt, but the other characters are not even human – they come from distinct alien species. This series is probably the first adult science-fiction series I’ve read, and I’m super excited to see what this book brings.

Sugar and Spice by Lisa Papademetiou

I’m not sure if I’ve shared this yet, but I love cupcake/sweet themed books. This is book three in the Confectionately Yours series, an adorable middle-grade collection that follows Haley as she navigates the perils of junior high. She turns all of her problems into cupcakes at her grandmother’s tea shops. And the books actually include her recipes!

Scooby Doo y el Barco Hundido by James Gelsey

I’m always trying to improve my Spanish, so I try to read books to increase my vocabulary. While I can (and have) read more complex novels in Spanish, I’m more comfortable at a children’s chapter book level. This book, which in English is Scooby Doo and the Sunken Ship follows Scooby Doo’s adventures at the beach.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

I first heard about this book via YouTuber Thoughts on Tomes. Then, my friend read it and recommended it. And since this particular friend has excellent taste in books, that means I have to read it! It is about an “audacious criminal and his band of confidence tricksters” according to Goodreads. I can’t wait to read it. (Also, the cover of the book I’ve borrowed is much prettier than the one pictured here.)

The False Prince by Jennifer Neilson

This is one that I probably should have read years ago. It’s the first book in a young-adult fantasy trilogy, and it’s another one lent to me by my friend (the one with impeccable book taste). It follows an orphan named Sage who is recruited to be a “puppet prince” for the king, presumably to do a nobleman’s bidding. It sounds enthralling and I hope it lives up to its potential.

The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud

This book follows a boy-magician and a powerful genie he has summoned. I don’t know much beyond that – but do I really need too? I also get the impression that the genie is somewhat snarky – I’ll have to read the book to find out!

Redwall by Brian Jacques

I’ve been obsessed with reading about mice since at least first grade, and my friends were flabbergasted to find out that I’ve never read this book. So after it’s long-standing place on my to-read list, it will (hopefully) finally be read! I can’t wait to read what happens in this kingdom of animals.
